The combining of Model C schools with the Township schools is the new attempt by Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, to overcome the effects of apartheid.
There are 14 schools dentified for the experimental school combining:
Laerskool Jan van Riebeeck and Payneville Primary School.
Herskool Waterkloof and Mamelodi Seconadary School.
Laerskool Kruinsig and Tlamatlama Primary School.
Hoerskool Noordheuwel and Kagiso Secondary School.
Sandown High School and Alexandra High School.
Hoerskool Kempton Park and Boitumelong Secondary School.
The MEC has said that merged schools would have one principal, one school governing body and one budget. But there are further issues. The objective is also for the schools to share resources, facilities and staff members. Will educators be bussed between schools? Will learners be bussed between schools? How else would staff and facilities be divided? And what would the quintile status of a merged school be? Suppose a quintile 5 school merges with a quintile 1 historically black school of equal size. Would the merged school be quintile 5? Quintile 1? Neither seems reasonable. Perhaps quintile 3? If educators are to be bussed, they will have to spend significant time on transport and on their teaching functions. Would educators, currently barely preferring to teach with working elsewhere, leave the school system altogether?
